Cheval Noir is made from grapes grown on hillside vineyards with clay-limestone soil. The blend consists of 85% Merlot, which adds fruitiness and roundness; 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides structure; and 5% Cabernet Franc, which lends aromatic finesse. About the estate:
The name refers to the powerful black horses used in the 19th century for the grape harvest, and it became a brand in 1895—the oldest in the Bordeaux region. It was acquired in 1937 by the venerable wine merchant Mähler-Besse, founded in 1892 and co-owner of Château Palmer in Margaux. The estate covers 4.5 hectares.
