“Clerc Milon 2019 is a true success. With over 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of the variety in the estate’s recent history, and the result is a wine of genuine nobility. This wine is by far the most structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild’s two Pauillac counterparts. ” (Wine Advocate 2022). Wine rated (2020 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2016 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

Rich, colorful, and full-bodied, this vintage features a blend with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon—a trend that will continue in future vintages. A beautiful, classic Pauillac with excellent aging potential, magnificent oak integration, and a price that remains affordable.

About the estate:

Along with Armailhac, this is the other Fifth Growth of the Rothschild (Mouton) family. Long overshadowed by its elder sibling, Mouton, and somewhat lacking in character, it has regained its identity since the 2000s thanks to more rigorous and tailored management. A new, highly original winery—built entirely of wood in accordance with strict environmental specifications—now allows this superb Pauillac fifth growth to be vinified and aged under optimal conditions. Its terroir is clayier than that of the Mouton plateau, lending greater richness of expression to the Merlot grape, which is used here in a higher proportion.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A classic Cabernet nose, generous and quite expressive, brimming with blackcurrant and black plums. Rich and densely concentrated, yet with a refreshing crispness derived from the limestone. Deep on the palate, it is powerful and offers a real sense of complexity with flavors that are well-defined and direct. Smooth yet muscular, with a fresh, minty, licorice-tinged, and gently sweet finish that leaves a truly lasting and delicious impression. A brilliantly concentrated, powerful, and sophisticated glass of wine. A persistent finish that will age very well. I love the texture and overall feel of this wine. Rated estate (2016 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

Formerly owned by Lafite, this classified growth was acquired during the French Revolution by the Clerc family, who added the name of a hamlet in Pauillac to their own, and later by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1970. Located between Mouton and Lafite, in the northeastern part of the appellation, it boasts a 41-hectare vineyard situated on prime terroir (primarily the Mousset hill overlooking the Gironde) and a new winery completed in 2011.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100 (Extraordinary wine)

Estate rated "Recommended" (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The 2019 Clerc Milon is a true triumph. With Cabernet Sauvignon making up over 70% of the blend—one of the highest proportions in the estate’s recent history—the result is a wine of genuine nobility. Offering aromas of violet, wild berries, licorice, clay soil, and cigar wrapper, it is full-bodied, complex, and multidimensional, with remarkable depth at its core, lively acidity, and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. Grown on clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravel that characterizes d'Armailhac, this wine is by far the most structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild’s two Pauillac stablemates. Rated estate (2016 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

This vintage has the highest percentage of Cabernet since… 1986. The wine continues to develop along a more focused, elegant path, displaying beautiful structure. A benchmark bottle for the estate that heralds a new style we wholeheartedly endorse.

About the estate:

This château is part of the Rothschild (Mouton) portfolio. It is always fascinating to compare it to its sibling, Armailhac. Vinified by the same team, the second wine embraces a classic style, with a significant proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, while the first wine relies on a higher proportion of Merlot. After a period of ups and downs, the wine has returned to its best form, with better-defined concentration and velvety texture. The recent construction of a fermentation vat and a wine cellar has allowed it to go even further.

About the wine:

The 2019 vintage of Château Clerc Milon is truly impressive. Dense, opulent, and explosive, the 2019 Clerc Milon offers a captivating blend of ink and dense fruit interwoven with savory notes from the blend’s 72% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest proportion since 1986). Dried herbs, tobacco, menthol, and licorice intertwine in a deep, resonant finish. Superb.

About the wine:

Aromas of crushed stone, blackcurrant, and blackberry. Full-bodied, with exceptionally well-structured tannins that are soft and robust, yet polished and fantastic. I love the finish. Best enjoyed after 2026.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 92/100

About the wine:

If you close your eyes, you’ll find yourself standing before a deep, cold lake, before the notes of peony emerge. Dark fruit on the palate, hints of elderflower, and a lovely finish. A wine that feels like a gentle caress, though a bit shy.

Yves Beck

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2021 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

You have to go back to the 1986 vintage to find this much Cabernet Sauvignon at Clerc-Milon. The bouquet is fresh and subtle, with elegant notes of red fruit followed by hints of mocha, licorice, and graphite. On the palate, the wine develops slowly, like many great Pauillacs from this vintage. The tannins are fine, precise, juicy, and in harmony with the acidity. A wine with body, vibrancy, and great length. A fine achievement that has what it takes to stand the test of time.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Wine rated (2022 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A deep, intense purple color. The nose is moderately intense, with ripe fruit and a delicately creamy quality. It is on the palate that this wine truly reveals its appeal, as well as its newfound charm. Soft on the palate, offering a delicate texture and a very flavorful body with a vibrant aroma, the wine evolves fully without losing its meticulous character, leading to a long finish where the flavor nevertheless evokes the Right Bank (thanks to the limestone). A superb wine, more precise than ever.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2020 guide) 94/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is elegant and refined, offering a touch of concentration and power (yet perfectly controlled), a fine-grained texture, and a hint of intensity. It features notes of juicy blackcurrant, juicy strawberry, and, more subtly, juicy black berries, combined with hints of violet and lily, as well as touches of zan, Cubeb pepper, nutmeg, very subtle hints of spice, and a subtle hint of vanilla. The palate is fruity and balanced, offering a juicy, subtly tart structure, tension, finesse, a very delicate creaminess, lovely juiciness and freshness, good definition, richness, a fine (and distinguished) texture, and precision. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackcurrant, juicy/fresh blackberry, and, to a lesser extent, juicy/fresh strawberry, combined with subtle hints of violet, lily, chocolate, and caramelization, as well as very delicate hints of zan, Cuben pepper, and a very subtle hint of star anise and toasted hazelnut. The tannins are elegant, refined, and very delicately smooth.

Wine rated 94/100

About the wine:

Blackcurrant, licorice, and Cabernet Franc bring out lovely floral notes. The palate is full-bodied and taut, with density yet always delicate and refined. It also has power, but it’s perfectly restrained. What freshness! A Clerc Milon with great aging potential.
