About the estate:

Philippine de Rothschild left her children an estate in excellent condition, managed by an impeccable technical team. Originally known as Brane-Mouton, the estate became Mouton-Rothschild in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it. His great-grandson Philippe took over in 1922 and began bottling the wine for sale. Mouton’s exceptional terroir and its very old vines—enhanced in recent vintages by favorable weather and a magnificent winery established in 2013—produce perhaps the most formally perfect wine in the Médoc. This will not prevent it from closing in on itself in great vintages before reaching a peak that is predicted to be glorious. The second wine, Petit-Mouton, resembles the grand vin like a younger brother, and the white, Aile-d’Argent, is gradually becoming one of the most complete in the Médoc.

About the estate:

Acquired in 1853 by the Rothschild family, Château Mouton Rothschild is closely associated with Baron Philippe. Taking the helm of the estate in 1922, he restored its prestige by modernizing it (notably through the construction of the famous “grand chai”)—an effort that culminated in 1973 with the revision of the 1855 classification and Mouton’s elevation to the rank of First Growth. Baron Philippe also turned the estate into the foundation of a small empire comprising other vineyards and a wine merchant firm. He also played an important role in the history of wine by being one of the first to bottle wine at the château, as early as 1926, and by commissioning artists to design his labels. Starting in 1988, his daughter Philippine, who passed away in 2014, continued his work. Her children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, succeeded her. Philippe Dhalluin has been the director since 2003. At his disposal is an 84-hectare vineyard located primarily on a ridge of very deep gravel known as the “Plateau de Mouton” and a brand-new winery completed in 2013.

About the estate:

Philippe Sereys de Rothschild has presided over this iconic family estate in Pauillac since 2014. The wine, as flamboyant as ever and naturally exuding generous smoky notes, is more in its element than ever. While Mouton experienced a slump in the mid-1990s, it was brilliantly revived in the early 2000s. Since then, a series of magnificent vintages has continued to write the legend of the only 1855 classified growth to have been promoted: from second growth, it logically moved up to first growth in 1973. The architect of the estate’s revival, Philippe Dhalluin has handed over the reins to a strong duo consisting of Ariane Khaida (general manager) and Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy (technical director). Mouton, equipped with a new winery since 2013, continues to thrive at the top. Of particular note is the progress made by the white wine, which is clearer and more precise than ever.

About the wine:

Wow! The aromas are so complex: blackcurrant, asphalt, violet, pencil shavings, orange blossom, and black truffle. A perfect nose. Full-bodied but supported by harmonious tannins that carry through the entire length of the wine, giving it a seductive palate and lingering finish. A vintage with one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon ever recorded. The quintessence of a great Bordeaux without limits. Best enjoyed after 2028.

Bottled in June 2024, the 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild is a classic blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, aged entirely in new oak barrels. Incredibly concentrated yet light and graceful, this inky-red wine displays sensational notes of blackcurrant, graphite, crushed stone, and chocolate that are simply breathtaking. It embodies the ripe, opulent style of the vintage while offering exceptional purity, generous tannins, and a magnificent finish. For enthusiasts, this wine has an alcohol content of 14%, a pH of 3.86, and an IPT (tannins) of 76. It possesses the depth of fruit and texture necessary to offer incredible enjoyment right now, but it deserves a decade of bottle aging and will continue to evolve for 50 to 60 years. It reminds me of a blend from 2009 and 2010. 2035–2095

What is striking about this wine is the grandeur it displays spontaneously, without a shadow of a doubt, without the slightest hesitation! The interplay between fruit, terroir, aging, and freshness is breathtaking. It reminds me of the bouquet of the 1986 vintage, which is a valuable benchmark. On the palate, the wine begins by revealing its charm, quickly enveloped by fine-grained tannins and a constructive, structuring austerity that extends the finish and the aromatic persistence. A Mouton of the highest caliber that ranks among the estate’s Hall of Fame. Of course, it hasn’t yet fully revealed itself—and rightly so—because it already has more than enough qualities to amaze! It thus has the luxury of improving with age while already being perfect. I’m not going to resort to the 101/100 scoring system again, but we could award it a 180, just like in darts. 2030–2070

About the wine:

The nose is elegant, mineral, intense, refined, powerful, and airy, with a very subtly tight, intense, and airy texture. It features notes of Boysenberry, morello cherry, and, more subtly, warm, refined earthiness combined with hints of violet, dense berries, a touch of graphene, subtle hints of nutmeg, a subtle hint of star anise, and a hint of herbal infusion (in its freshness). The palate is beautifully structured, elegant, precise, deep, airy, and finely crafted, offering a sense of freshness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy, juicy blackberry; bright blackcurrant; and, more subtly, elegant roasted raspberry and morello cherry, combined with hints of elegant roasted fruit as well as subtle hints of licorice root, tonka bean/chocolate, and tobacco. The tannins are soft, elegant, and silky. Good length. A beautifully crafted wine—soft, rich, deep, and perfectly balanced, with meticulous attention to detail. Superb finish.
