Château Pédesclaux
Château Pédesclaux was created at the beginning of the 19th century, in 1810, by Monsieur Urbain Pierre Pédesclaux, a well-known and esteemed Bordeaux wine broker. In 1855, Château Pédesclaux was classified as the Fifth Grand Cru Classé Pauillac. The Count of Gastebois bought the property in 1891. It was completely rebuilt to improve the quality of the wines. Purchased by Monsieur Lorenzetti, also owner of Château Lilian-Ladouys, he launched the reorganization of the Château Pédesclaux vineyard with the acquisition of new plots. He also put in place a vast replanting program, with a total change in the team in charge of production. Everything was done with one aim in mind: to improve the quality of the wine and restore it to its former glory.
At the time of the 1855 classification, Château Pédesclaux represented a 25-hectare vineyard located in the commune of Pauillac. It was divided between two groups of plots and two types of soil. On the one hand, the gravelly clay-limestone soil in the northern part of the appellation, between Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Pontet-Canet, favored vines with power and bouquet. On the other hand, the siliceous gravels to the west of Pauillac near Château Lynch-Bages, soils conducive to finesse and minerality. As for the Château Pédesclaux vineyard, it illustrates a Merlot tendency for a Médoc Cru Classé. Merlot accounts for 45% of the grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon for 50% and Cabernet Franc for 5%.
