Champagne André Robert - Grand Cru Extra Brut Les Jardins du Mesnil
90/100
Gault & Millau
“A distinguished Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru with an elegant profile—a true favorite!”
“No showboating, no fuss, no exuberance—but what a delicate freshness, what a subtle floral note, what a salty, chalky finish. We love this spring-like character, the angelica note, and the delicate bitterness. On the palate, the wine is straightforward and balanced, with citrus notes taking center stage. The overall impression is refreshing and mouthwatering—perfect with fish in a beurre blanc sauce or simply as an aperitif.”(Gault & Millau 2026).

About the estate:
It was in Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, that Hubert Robert (grandfather of the current owner) founded the first cooperative of winemakers in the 1930s to press and vinify their harvest together. In 1960, André Robert purchased the current estate, which features 19th-century chalk cellars. Chardonnay is the heart and soul of the estate; the wines are aged in barrels on their lees with regular stirring (bâtonnage) and bottled late. A collection of older vintages is available.

2014 base wine with 2013 reserve wine. Disgorged in 2020 and best enjoyed in 2025. Pear notes on the nose. On the palate, it’s fairly unremarkable. Good but not memorable,

A cuvée I’ve been following for quite a few years now, and it never disappoints. A sure bet for an aperitif with gougères for fans of extra brut cuvées.

An excellent champagne—just the way I like it: lots of fine bubbles, not too sweet, and a distinct Chardonnay character. Pure pleasure.

A delightful discovery: this pure, medium-bodied Chardonnay. The very fine bubbles and light, delicate mousse give way to a full-bodied, creamy palate, rich with buttery notes, subtly rounded, and mineral-driven. The invigorating finish lingers with briny notes. Freshness—and nothing but freshness—from this 10° cuvée, allowing the meaty, briny texture of a red sea bream tartare and citrus-infused langoustine tails to fully shine. Mid-range price. Rating = 4.
