Bettane & Desseauve

"Featured more than once in the guide, this blanc de blancs was unanimously acclaimed this year. It is made from Chardonnays harvested in 2008 and 2007, aged for one year in barrels and left to mature for five years in the cellar. Its deep yellow color is punctuated by fine bubbles. Its nose combines candied fruit with toasted and vanilla aromas, reflecting its time in oak. Brioche enriches this palette on the palate, which is full-bodied, ample, and elegant. A beautiful climax."(Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019)

Wine rated 14/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About wine:

Based on the 2006 vintage, this structured wine is tailor-made for a meal.

About the estate:

Located in Cramant, a renowned terroir for great Chardonnays, this 22-hectare family estate is now run by Jean-Étienne and Jean-Emmanuel Bonnaire. These champagnes are perfect as aperitifs and are considered to be among the best in the industry. The brothers also manage Champagnes Paul Clouet, a sister company that has been part of the family vineyard since 1992. Some of the cuvées are aged in wood, and older vintages can be disgorged on request. This is a reliable address that is progressing and refining its style.

About wine:

Featured prominently in the Guide on more than one occasion, this blanc de blancs was unanimously acclaimed this year. It is made from Chardonnay grapes harvested in 2008 and 2007, aged for one year in barrels and then left to mature for five years in the cellar. Its deep yellow color is punctuated by fine bubbles. Its nose combines candied fruit with toasted and vanilla aromas, reflecting its time in oak. Brioche enriches this palette on the palate, which is full-bodied, ample, and elegant. A beautiful climax.

About the estate:

Like many Champagne winegrowers, the great-grandfather of the current winegrowers gained independence from the wine trade following the 1929 crisis and began producing wine in 1932. Today, the estate covers 25 hectares, mainly in the Côte des Blancs. Since 2012, it has been run by Jean-Emmanuel and Jean-Étienne Bonnaire, sons of Jean-Louis, who passed away in 2015.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Recommended)

About the estate:

On the Côte des Blancs, the kingdom of Chardonnay, with vineyards acquired in Fossoy and Bergères-les-Vertus, the family estate founded in 1932, located in Cramant, is now run by the fourth generation with Jean-Etienne and Jean-Emmanuel Bonnaire. Their 22 hectares of vines, mainly composed of Chardonnay, produce grapes destined for ageing in vats and old barrels (Ver Sacrum and Variance cuvées, aged under cork for more than 6 years). The dosages have all been reduced.

A quality wine, unsurprisingly, which confirms the good impression I had of it at a wedding reception where it was served, although it was not the same bottle.

An excellent champagne with character, particularly suited to the table thanks to its vinous, even opulent nature, and all this for a more than reasonable price. A slight reservation regarding the aging, which somewhat dominates the raw material.

A favorite in the Guide Hachette? What a disappointment! Heavy, tannic (blanc de blancs?), lacking fruit and complexity. I want to believe that the sample bottle (which remained 3/4 full and ended up in a sauce) was defective... otherwise shame on the Guide Hachette jury!
