Bettane & Desseauve

"Having consistently ranked highly in the guide, this Blanc de Blancs was unanimously praised this year. It is made from Chardonnays from the 2008 and 2007 vintages, aged for one year in barrels and then for five years in the cellar. Its deep yellow color is dotted with fine bubbles. The nose combines candied fruit with toasty and vanilla aromas, reflecting its time in oak. Brioche notes enrich this profile, resulting in a full-bodied, ample, and elegant palate. A beautiful peak.”(Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019)

Wine rated 14/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

Based on the 2006 vintage, this full-bodied wine is perfect for a meal.

About the estate:

Located in Cramant, a premier terroir for great Chardonnays, this 22-hectare family estate is now run by Jean-Étienne and Jean-Emmanuel Bonnaire. Perfect as an aperitif, these champagnes are a sure bet in the region. The brothers also manage Champagnes Paul Clouet, a sister house affiliated with the family vineyard since 1992. Some of the cuvées are aged in oak, and older vintages can be disgorged upon request. This is a reliable producer that continues to evolve and refine its style.

About the wine:

Featured prominently in the Guide on more than one occasion, this blanc de blancs was unanimously praised this year. A beautiful peak.

About the estate:

Like many Champagne winegrowers, the great-grandfather of the current winemakers broke away from the wine merchants following the 1929 crisis and began bottling his own wine in 1932. Today, the estate covers 25 hectares, mainly in the Côte des Blancs. Since 2012, it has been run by Jean-Emmanuel and Jean-Étienne Bonnaire, sons of Jean-Louis, who passed away in 2015.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Recommended)

About the estate:

Located in the Côte des Blancs, the kingdom of Chardonnay, with vineyards acquired in Fossoy and Bergères-les-Vertus, this family estate—founded in 1932 and based in Cramant—is now run by the fourth generation, Jean-Etienne and Jean-Emmanuel Bonnaire. Their 22 hectares of vineyards, planted primarily with Chardonnay, produce grapes destined for aging in tanks and old barrels (the Ver Sacrum and Variance cuvées, aged under cork for over 6 years). All dosages have been reduced.

You shouldn't let a memory down... But I think the "Variance" vintage has a slight hint of must...

A quality wine, as expected, which confirms the good impression I had of it at a wedding reception—it was from the same region but not the same bottle.

An excellent, full-bodied champagne, particularly well-suited for the table thanks to its vinous, even opulent character—and all at a more than reasonable price. One minor reservation, however: the aging process slightly overpowers the raw ingredients.

A top pick in the Hachette Guide??? What a disappointment! Heavy, tannic (blanc de blancs?), with no fruit or complexity. I’d like to believe that the sample bottle (which remained three-quarters full and ended up in a sauce) was defective... otherwise, shame on the Hachette Guide jury!
