Bettane & Desseauve

"Clear color, pretty nose of pinot noir-style red fruit, pretty grape, still a little on its ferment, all finesse, more fruity than mineral though." (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve 2020) Faustine en rouge is fresh and digestible, revealing red and black berry fruits dominated by wild berry aromas, fine notes of pepper and spice. The whole is carried by beautiful, supple, crisp tannins and a pretty, intense fruit finish. Not to be missed!

Wine rated (2020 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Domaine rated (2020 guide) 4*Stars (Very high quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the wine:

Light color, lovely nose of pinot noir-style red fruit, lovely grapes, still a little on the ferment, all finesse, more fruity than mineral though.

About the domain :

In this historic landmark of Ajaccio vineyards, whose unique collection of old local white grape varieties has raised awareness of the moral and cultural obligation to diversify grape varieties throughout Corsica, Jean-Charles Abbatucci practices irreproachable viticulture with contagious generosity. The recent wines have the suppleness, naturalness and smoothness expected of them, and have clearly improved in consistency thanks to the complicity between the owner and a remarkable consultant oenologist, Emmanuel Gagnepain. Cuvée Faustine shines with pure finesse, while the grand cuvées Collection, Ministre, Général and Diplomate offer the refined complexity of their pioneering grape varieties. New cuvées, monte-bianco, alte-rosso, valle-di-nero, are starting to be produced, but the estate has not yet sent them out for tasting. That will be next year.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Domaine rated (guide 2023) 3*Stars (They represent the excellence of the French vineyard. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wines is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

Like the white, Faustine rouge is a little lacking in fleshiness: although its fruit is delicious and fine, the whole remains a little light and simple.

About the domain :

The history of this estate began in the 20th century with a visionary, Antoine Abbatucci, the founder of this wine nursery, a veritable conservatory of indigenous Corsican grape varieties. Jean-Charles Abbatucci, Antoine's son, has taken the estate to the next level (massal selections, demanding biodynamics, rootstocks adapted to soil and climate...). The wines are easy to digest and fine, thanks to the refusal of excessive interventionism, and the maturing process has been refined by the use of foudres and concrete eggs.

Striking, very lively nose of Morello cherry. A truly wild wine, reminding me of some modern Fixin or Marsannay reds. Taut mouthfeel, good acidity, normal length. Perfect for noble grilled meats: fine prime rib or marcassin cooked with southern or Corsican spices (and not at all suitable for daubes and stews). There's nobility in this well-made, juicy and appetizing product! To be retained, but the price is not innocent. Perfect as it is, enjoy it before the sun leaves us.

A red wine unworthy of being Corsican! Red too light, no depth in the mouth, with an unpleasant bitterness! I don't recommend it at all!
