Barbera d'Alba
The Barbera d'Alba Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) is an Italian designation from the Piedmont region, recognized as a DOC since May 27, 1970. Only red wines harvested within the production area defined by the decree are eligible for the Barbera d'Alba DOC. The authorized vineyards are located in the province of Cuneo. The approximately 2,500 hectares of Barbera d'Alba vineyards yield an annual production of about 44,000 hectoliters.
Barbera red wine meets less stringent specifications than Barbera d'Alba Superiore, primarily regarding aging and alcohol content. It generally has a ruby-red color with garnet highlights, a vinous, intense, and characteristic nose, and a powerful, slightly tannic palate. Barbera d'Alba can age for 5–7 years and is comparable in quality to a Barolo. In Italy, Barbera d'Alba is considered one of the best appellations using the Barbera grape variety. The wines offered by producers such as Renato Ratti and Ornella Corregia seem to confirm this reputation.
