Elio Altare Estate
Elio Altare belongs to that select group of winemakers to whom we owe the exceptional quality of Piedmontese wine. Much to his father’s dismay, Elio Altare turned the Barolo tradition on its head after his first trip to Burgundy, a journey that would radically transform his approach to winemaking. Going against the grain of the times, he was quickly labeled a “modernist.” He took his visceral drive to improve Piedmont’s wines so far that his father disinherited him, and upon his father’s death, Elio Altare had to buy back the estate to continue his work.

The Elio Altare estate is located in La Morra, a Barolo village renowned for the finesse and elegance of its wines. Like the region’s greatest producers, it uses no pesticides or chemical treatments, does not inoculate the wines during fermentation, and does not filter.

The Elio Altare estate is now brilliantly managed by his daughter, the bubbly and vivacious Silvia, with the support of Elio, who remains actively involved in day-to-day operations. Anyone who has had the opportunity to taste a Barolo or a Langhefrom Elio Altare will cherish the memory for a lifetime. The wines are refined and elegant, with absolutely fabulous silky tannins, incredible balance, and freshness.
