"The Gaja 2018 Barolo Sperss is impossible to confuse with any other Barolo according to the Wine Advocate, the expression of this nebbiolo is impressive!"

"From Serralunga d'Alba, the Gaja 2018 Barolo Sperss is impossible to mistake for any other Barolo. The bouquet is firm and etched, with aromas of black fruits, pencil shavings, iron and red brick. But there's also a fragrant interlude of wild cherry, forest fruit and orange peel. The Barolo Conteisa is riper and silkier in this vintage, but the Sperss is more muscular, powerful and structured. It promises longer ageing potential and bottle evolution. 2025-2055" (Wine Advocate 2023)

About the wine:

Pale ruby. A richer raspberry nose than previous Barbarescos, with hints of cinnamon and impressive depth. Supple, pure raspberry on the palate, with a thick layer of coating tannins. Good length and freshness. Elegance is the order of the day. 20024-2036

About the wine:

The 2018 Barolo is a magnificent wine. The aromas alone are fascinating. Again, this is one of the things that makes Sperss Barolo such an appealing wine. Sweet black cherry, lavender, spice and leather give this exceptionally translucent Barolo an impressive dimension. Serralunga's powerful tannins are present, but beautifully integrated into the wine's framework.

About the wine:

Lots of rose petal, stem and sandalwood aromas, as well as plums and berries. Medium-bodied, with a tight palate and very fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Linear and concentrated. Notes of nutmeg and pastry enhance the palate. Accessible now, but needs three or four years to open up. Try it after 2026.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 97/100

About the wine:

Bright, brilliant ruby. Dense, compact nose, notes of ripe fruit, plum, rose petals and truffle with subtle smoky notes. The palate is impressive, with lots of tight, well entangled tannins, bite, the firm character of Serralunga wines, and earthy notes on the finish.
