Since the 1970s, this certified organic estate has been one of the appellation’s jewels, appearing in the Guide with unwavering consistency. Boasting a magnificent terroir of 70 small schist plots (58 hectares) that sculpt the landscape, it now benefits from the expertise of the younger generation, inherited from grandfather Jean and father Bernard Vidal, both former presidents of the appellation.

This cuvée serves as a welcome reminder that there are still fine wines from schist-based terroirs that valiantly showcase the old Carignan grape. From the very first sip, it takes you on a deep, deep dive into the depths to encounter a rich density and complexity of dark, very dark, ripe, very ripe, almost saturated black fruits, along with earthy notes that envelop the palate and linger endlessly. Finally, we return to the surface with just the right amount of tension for a superb, long finish with a mineral edge on a bed of powerful, juicy, yet still slightly firm tannins. That’s an understatement for this 2020, which is only just beginning to show its charm and whose best is yet to come in two to three years. With a bit more finesse, this would lean toward a wine for purists. Tasted at 16°C with barbecued Cévennes lamb skewers, accompanied by a small portion of aligot.
