Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2025 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the estate:
Jérôme Bertrand’s dedication and hard work on the fine terroirs of Paziols have made the Bertrand-Bergé estate a benchmark for the entire appellation. The entry-level red wines are affordably priced and exceed Fitou’s quality standards. The smooth Jean Sirven cuvée bears the name of the grandfather, who was already dedicated to quality viticulture at the beginning of the last century. Today, this cuvée stands out among the elite of the South’s greatest wines thanks to its character and depth. An essential destination in Languedoc.
Guide Hachette des vins
Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather Jean Sirven, who produced wine in the late 19th century, Jérôme Bertrand left the cooperative in 1993 to make his own wines. He believed early on in the quality of Fitou’s rugged terroirs, nurtured and promoted the region’s wines, and eventually established his estate (40 hectares) among the finest. Since the 2011 harvest, the vineyard has been certified organic.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 90/100
Rated Estate (2025 guide) Selected (We remind you that this guide is a ranking and that as such, all the estates that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production.)
About the wine:
Origines is a fruity and voluptuous Fitou with notes of violet.
About the estate:
Located in Paziols, in the upper part of Fitou, near the Pyrénées-Orientales, this estate has been part of the village for six generations. Jérôme, supported by his sister and his wife Sabine, cultivates some forty hectares, divided into four plots, the main one being La Boulière, a site characterized by a mix of rounded pebbles and crushed limestone. Originally dedicated to reds, this terroir also shines in dry whites. The 1911 cellar is well worth a visit. For those wishing to extend their stay in this wonderful setting, the estate offers guesthouses as well as 4x4 tours through the vineyards.

A wine that’s simply pleasant—good with a meal, but unremarkable on its own.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on April 24, 2023
A brilliant cuvée with a character that is both wild and spirited, beautifully blending the power of Carignan with the tenderness of Grenache Noir. A clean, juicy attack. A voluptuous, sap-filled, and opulent palate where broad, vibrant fruitiness peaks intensely thanks to lovely flavors of crisp cherries and baked prunes, with a vegetal hint of garrigue, harmoniously enveloped by fresh, well-rounded tannins. A captivating texture with a melt-in-the-mouth feel and a delicately earthy quality right through to the finish, which is fresh and lingering, with a hint of oriental spices. A score of 4.3 for this incredibly charming cuvée with an excellent price-quality ratio. A quintessential terroir wine offering immediate pleasure, Les Origines paired perfectly with juniper-braised partridges, accompanied by a sauté of the first spring false morels.

Deep purplish-red color, with a firm purple core. Nose: red and dark fruit, primarily blackcurrant and blackberry, along with meat juices, green herbs, lovage, and a hint of nutmeg. Palate: a burst of juicy and crisp cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry flavors, followed by warm spice and herbs, as well as chocolate and dark notes. Unfiltered, and you can really tell: a meaty structure, plenty of body, and fine-grained tannins, with plenty of grip and power. Perhaps a bit on the modern side, but certainly appealing to a wide audience. Score: 15.5+/20
