Bettane & Desseauve

“A very refined nose, with lovely ripe fruit, sweet spices, smoke, and hints of chalk and garrigue; on the palate, it’s flavorful and aromatic, with velvety tannins and plenty of freshness. Balanced, lively, and easy to drink.” (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve 2019) Power and finesse!

Wine rated (2019 guide) 15/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2025 guide) 1*Star (A well-crafted, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the wine:

A very refined nose with lovely ripe fruit, sweet spices, smoke, and hints of chalk and garrigue; on the palate, it’s flavorful and aromatic, with velvety tannins and plenty of freshness. Balanced, lively, and easy to drink.

About the estate:

The Sieur d’Arques cooperative is Limoux’s leading economic player, bringing 16 million bottles to market. A pioneer in single-vineyard selection, it has been committed to a quality-focused approach for the past twenty years and continues to produce exceptionally well-balanced vintages. The “Toques-et-Cloche” line of white wines, made from Chardonnay grapes sourced from Limoux’s four terroirs, is aged in barrels in the Burgundian style with regular stirring on the lees, resulting in generous, charming, and perfectly balanced wines. A lovely selection of high-quality sparkling wines perfectly complements the winery’s entire portfolio. Its consistent quality makes it a true flagship for the appellation.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated Estate (2025 Guide) Award-Winning Wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

The Sieur d'Arques cooperative winery is a key player in the Limoux wine region, where it accounts for approximately 60% of production. Founded in 1946, it now brings together some 205 members and owns a vast vineyard of 1,800 hectares spread across more than 40 municipalities, enabling it to conduct a rigorous plot-by-plot selection across a wide variety of terroirs. Its “Toques et Clochers” auction, established in 1990, has given Limoux a renewed sense of prominence and drawn attention to its still wines.

It’s a bit high in alcohol, but its energy and vibrant fruit make it exciting.
