“Distinctive, powerful, dense, and tannic—a memorable experience…”

“A true Chinon institution, once owned by the parents of the great Rabelais, Clos de L’Écho asserts itself with this 2019 vintage through a character defined by purity and intensity. This character is refined by extended vatting and gentle tannin extraction. These silky, refined tannins support a Chinon centered on black fruit—highly balanced, full-bodied, and long-finishing, with remarkable depth.” (Le Guide Hachette).

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Arnaud, who has been at the helm for several vintages now, is now in sole charge. The Clos-de-l’Olive and the Clos-de-l’Écho, the winery’s two flagship wines, are age-worthy wines that best express their terroir—the former through depth and the latter through power. Don’t overlook the “simple” René-Couly Chinon, a delightful wine offering immediate pleasure.

About the estate:

The Couly-Dutheil estate was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil; today it is run by Jacques Couly-Dutheil and his son Arnaud. With vineyards spanning nearly 94 hectares, including the prestigious Clos de l'Écho and Clos de l'Olive, a modern winery carved into the rock, and impressive 16th-century cellars located beneath the Château de Chinon, it is an integral part of the Chinon wine region’s landscape. An essential reference.

Rated wine (2024 guide) 91/100 (Excellent wine)

About the wine:

The 2019 Chinon Clos de l'Echo, less oaky than its 2018 counterpart, offers a bouquet of flowers, dark wild berries, baked plums, and spices. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, enveloping and round, it is concentrated with structured yet elegant tannins that assert themselves within a fleshy core of fruit, concluding with a long and imposing finish. It lacks finesse and elegance.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100

About the wine:

Located in the heart of Chinon, with one of the best views of the fortress, the 2019 Clos de l'Echo offers a concentrated, compact core of dark fruit. Hailing from the hot, dry 2019 growing season, it displays abundant ripeness and a sensation of smoothness on the palate. Lovers of textured wine will be delighted: there is plenty of substance and an almost meaty feel, with chalky tannins that coat the cheeks. The long, fragrant finish is marked by notes of smoked bacon, violet, exotic spices, tea leaves, and ripe red fruit.
