Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Arnaud, who has been at the helm for several vintages now, is now in sole charge. The Clos-de-l’Olive and the Clos-de-l’Écho, the winery’s two flagship wines, are age-worthy wines that best express their terroir—the former through depth and the latter through power. Don’t overlook the “simple” René-Couly Chinon, a delightful wine offering immediate pleasure.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (Outstanding wine)

About the estate:

The Couly-Dutheil estate was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil; today it is run by Jacques Couly-Dutheil and his son Arnaud. With vineyards spanning nearly 94 hectares, including the prestigious Clos de l'Écho and Clos de l'Olive, a modern winery carved into the rock, and impressive 16th-century cellars located beneath the Château de Chinon, it is an integral part of the Chinon wine region’s landscape. An essential reference.

Wine rated 92/100 (Wonderful wine)

About the wine:

The 2018 Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine is very intense and aromatic, with a fruity and floral nose revealing aromas of perfectly ripe cherry, stewed blackberry, and blackcurrant. Bottled at 15% ABV, it is a very rich, round, intense Cabernet Franc—almost port-like—with massive power and tannins that are nonetheless fine and not at all drying. It is a charming Chinon, almost Languedoc-like, that is quite respectable [...] I am sure many readers will appreciate this generous, intensely fruity, elegant, and somewhat smoky style.

About the wine:

The 2018 Chinon Baronnie Madeleine is a full-bodied, powerful wine sourced from two vineyards located on the clay-limestone plateau of Chinon. This was a warm vintage, so you can expect well-ripened fruit, succulence, and a good alcohol content (14.5%) that adds richness. It retains its red fruit character, but there’s also a hint of riper black cherry, along with a peppery note and a touch of green. The acidity is surprisingly refreshing given the fruit’s ripeness.
