Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2026 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Stéphane Sérol is leading his estate toward excellence. The 34 hectares of vineyards showcase the Gamay grape, which truly comes into its own here on the granite and porphyry soils. Combined with meticulous, biodynamic viticulture, this estate stands out for its carefully crafted, hand-harvested wines. The various vintages offer a fresh structure and rich flavor, particularly the Les-Millerands cuvée, which is well worth aging in the cellar. A sure bet for great, enjoyable wines.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

A talented champion of the local vineyard’s revival, Stéphane Sérol took over this 37-hectare estate (certified organic and biodynamic) in 1998. The estate’s origins date back to 1700, and his father, Robert, first brought it to prominence in 1971 by selling wine directly to consumers by the bottle. A (very) safe bet in the Côte Roannaise region.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

Carine and Stéphane Sérol have never brought out the best in Gamay Saint-Romain and the Côte Roannaise quite like this. Grown on sandy, granite-rich terroirs at high altitudes (380 to 520 meters), their reds showcase the variety’s delicately smoky, floral, and airy character. Grown on high-density vineyards (8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare), the grapes are partially or even completely destemmed before being gently vinified. The progress made over the past decade has been remarkable, and the wines have never better captured the identity of their terroirs. Note the added refinement in the whites.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 16,5/20

About the wine:

Pale to medium-intense garnet color. A typical Gamay aroma, with very alluring, full-bodied notes. Plenty of acidity and bite. Bursting with energy. A must-try!
