“Plenty of aromas of blackberry, damp earth, and black mushrooms. It’s full-bodied with lovely depth of fruit and pronounced tannins. Smooth and intense. Slate and black fruit on the finish. Needs time to come together. Try it after 2022.” (James Suckling 2020)

About the wine:
The 2017 Batuta is a rustic blend from old vines, aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. It has an alcohol content of just 13%. It wasn’t quite bottled when we tasted it; this was the final blend, straight from the barrel. Good. While I thought the Redoma was gloriously fresh, this one surpasses it quite easily. “Glorious” is the right word here, at least when paired with “freshness.” Silky, fruity, and unpretentious, it has a lingering finish filled with fruity flavors. As always, there isn’t much depth, and it comes across as understated for its price point. And, as tends to be the case, I have a slight preference for the Redoma in the lineup. This 2017, however, is certainly an excellent example of a table wine that will go down easily with a meal. Its freshness will preserve it as it ages, but it’s surprisingly approachable right now.
