“Lots of aromas of blackberry, damp earth, and black truffle. It’s full-bodied with lovely depth of fruit and pronounced tannins. Rich and intense. Slate and black fruit on the finish. Needs time to come together. Try after 2022.” (James Suckling 2020)

Rated wine (2019 guide) 92–94/100 (Excellent wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The 2017 Batuta is a rustic blend made from old vines and aged for 20 months in barrels that were 25% new French oak. It has an alcohol content of just 13%. It wasn’t quite bottled when we tasted it; this was the final blend, straight from the barrel. Good. If I thought the Redoma was gloriously fresh, this one surpasses it quite easily. “Glorious” is the right word here, at least when paired with “freshness.” Silky, fruity, and straightforward, it has a lingering finish filled with fruity flavors. As always, there isn’t much depth, and it feels a bit understated for its price point. And, as tends to happen, I have a slight preference for the Redoma in the lineup. This 2017, however, is certainly an excellent example of a table wine that will go down easily at the dinner table. Its freshness will preserve it as it ages, but it’s surprisingly approachable right now.
