Domaine François Merlin - Côte Rôtie 2020
"A wine with a fruity, mineral character"
Côte-Rôtie, the most famous appellation in the Côtes-du-Rhône, is cultivated on two steep hillsides. The narrow Roman terraces have been “roasting” the grapes since ancient times. The microclimate of Ampuis, a happy combination of southern sunshine and cool humidity from Burgundy, allows for the production of an exceptional wine. François Merlin had long dreamed of this small, atypical plot of Côte Brune before finally succeeding in adding it to the estate. This Côte-Rôtie is a sensual wine that unfolds its delicate aromas in stages, culminating in a long, spectacular finish. A source of pride for the estate!

About the estate:
This small estate owns some lovely vineyards in Condrieu, some of which—such as Poncin—are very close to Château Grillet. We were more impressed by the red Saint-Josephs than by the Condrieus in 2017.
