"A wine made for aging"

"The blackberry and blueberry are barely ripe, giving a fairly dry and fresh aromatic expression. The palate is fuller than expected, with a roundness that is quite unusual in 2021. There is also some length. Good acidity, clean tannins and not too much oak." (Decanter 2022). The estate's flagship cuvée, present since its creation.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

A new wind is blowing at Vidal-Fleury. Antoine Dupré has replaced Guy Sarton du Jonchay at the helm of the oldest wine merchant in the northern Rhône (founded in 1781), now owned by the Guigal family but managed independently. New commercial ambitions are emerging, along with a gradual shift in style in the cellar, which is beginning to show in the range on offer. Watch this space.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Mentioned (Successful wine)

About the estate:

The oldest wine merchant in the Rhône region, founded in 1781 from its vineyard in Côte-Rôtie and renowned from very early on – Thomas Jefferson held a memorable banquet there in 1787. Owned by the Guigal family since 1986, it has a monumental cellar, whose architecture is inspired by the Egyptian site of Saqqara.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest winery in the Rhône Valley still in operation. It was bought by the Guigal family in the early 1980s and boasts modern, high-performance facilities, as well as autonomy in its management and winemaking. The range is extensive and covers most of the major appellations of the Rhône Valley. The wines are now reliable, in a rather classic style.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 16,5/20

About wine:

A hint of smoke accompanies raspberry and blackberry. A good core of black fruit, fine, chewy tannins, and lots of freshness. A savory note accompanies sweet blackberry, violet, and cherry. Leave to mature.
