“A wine made for aging”

“The blackberries and blueberries are barely ripe, resulting in a fairly dry and fresh bouquet. The palate is fuller than expected, with a roundness that’s quite unusual for 2021. It also has some length. Good acidity, with clean tannins that aren’t overly oaky.” (Decanter 2022). The estate’s signature cuvée, produced since its inception.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

There’s a breath of fresh air at Vidal-Fleury. Antoine Dupré has replaced Guy Sarton du Jonchay at the helm of the oldest wine merchant in the Northern Rhône (founded in 1781), now owned by the Guigal family but managed independently. New business ambitions are taking shape, and a new winemaking style is gradually emerging, which is beginning to show in the range of wines offered. Stay tuned.

About the estate:

The oldest active wine merchant in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1781 from its vineyards in Côte-Rôtie and renowned from the very beginning—Thomas Jefferson held a memorable banquet there in 1787. Owned by the Guigal family since 1986, it boasts a monumental cellar whose architecture is inspired by the Egyptian site of Saqqara.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest winery in the Rhône Valley still in operation. It was acquired by the Guigal family in the early 1980s and boasts modern, state-of-the-art facilities, as well as autonomy in its management and winemaking. The range is extensive and covers most of the major appellations of the Rhône Valley. The wines are now reliable, with a rather classic style.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 16,5/20

About wine:

A hint of smokiness complements the raspberry and blackberry notes. A rich core of dark fruit, with fine, well-integrated tannins and plenty of freshness. A savory note complements the sweet blackberry, violet, and cherry flavors. Best enjoyed after some aging.
