This red Côte du Rhône, with its crisp and rich character, is produced on these 60-year-old vineyards—the very first ones cultivated by Marcel Richaud in the 1970s. On the nose and palate, jammy red fruit dominates, with hints of garrigue and spices. Smooth and pleasant on the palate, it offers a peppery finish. Enjoy it with everyday meals, appetizers, cheeses, and cold cuts. A real treat!

Rated estate (2026 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

The younger generation—Claire, Thomas, and, more recently, Édith, the youngest—is brilliantly carrying on the work of their father Marcel, an iconic figure of the Cairanne appellation. While honoring their heritage, they are injecting new energy into the estate, marked in particular by the acquisition of an additional 20 hectares, part of which borders the famous Ebrescades plot. The wines, consistently of remarkable quality, are becoming even more refined and precise in their expression. More precise aromatically and more refined in texture, they now combine depth and immediacy in an increasingly accomplished balance.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 92/100 (2019 vintage)

Rated Estate (2027 Guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that—thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines—belong in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

This iconic estate has been brilliantly managed since 2014 by Claire and Thomas Richaud. They have brought their own artistic sensibility while preserving the estate’s spirit, combining rich ripeness with freshness. The way they handle these high-alcohol wines is truly admirable: each cuvée exudes its terroir and displays aromas of magnificent refinement. Over the past several vintages, these wines have gained even more finesse without losing any depth—they stand at the pinnacle of the southern Rhône.

3.7. The nose offers notes of red fruit, and the palate boasts a superb balance of fruit and spice. Slightly less intense than the 2019, it’s a great introduction to the Richaud style.

The wine is very nice, but the alcohol is far too pronounced, especially on the finish. 15.5%!

Review and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on January 21, 2022

The quality and modernity of the wines produced by Domaine RICHAUD never cease to amaze me. This remarkable entry-level wine is a perfect example. It is easy-drinking, rich, and opulent. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry, supported by round, velvety tannins, coat the palate, which is full-bodied and fleshy. A touch of acidity adds a hint of liveliness and rustic charm. The finish lingers with a long aftertaste enhanced by fresh spices and herbaceous notes. Excellent value for money. Very pleasant to drink despite its surprising 15.5° alcohol content; best served at 16° with Japanese gyudon.
