Domaine Marcel Richaud - Côtes du Rhône Terre d'Aigles 2020
92/100
RVF
This red Côte du Rhône, with its crisp and rich character, is produced from these 60-year-old vineyards—the very first plots cultivated by Marcel Richaud in the 1970s. On the nose and palate, jammy red fruits dominate, with hints of garrigue and spices. Supple and pleasant on the palate, it offers a peppery finish. Pair it with everyday meals, appetizers, cheeses, and cold cuts. A real treat!

Rated estate (2021 guide): 4 stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Some winemakers single-handedly embody an entire appellation, and the charismatic Marcel Richaud is one of them. He has undoubtedly played a key role in establishing the reputation of the newest addition to the Côtes du Rhône Sud crus. He, the visionary and pioneer of single-vineyard wines, who still dreams today of a classification akin to Burgundy’s climats, with 45 vintages under his belt, strives to be as non-interventionist as possible in the cellar and in the vineyard. Like a certain Emmanuel Reynaud, he brings his grapes to optimal ripeness, producing wines that are both rich and elegant—a true signature. All the wines tasted this year received top marks, proving to be highly recommendable and of absolutely remarkable consistency. The younger generation, which joined the family business a few years ago, is determined to preserve the estate’s expertise; nevertheless, as if to mark a turning point, Claire and Thomas have acquired an additional 20 hectares, half of which adjoins the famous Ebrescades plot, hinting at some lovely surprises to come. Most recently, Edith, the youngest of the family, succumbed to the siren call of the vineyards; after a brilliant career in the luxury sector in Paris, she finally settled in the charming little village of Cairanne, bringing a significant additional asset to the wonderful Richaud family.

3.7. The nose offers notes of red fruit, and the palate boasts a superb balance of fruit and spice. Slightly less intense than the 2019, it’s a great introduction to the Richaud style.

The wine is lovely, but the alcohol is far too prominent, especially on the finish. 15.5%!

The quality and modernity of the wines produced by Domaine RICHAUD never cease to amaze me. This remarkable entry-level wine is a perfect example. It is smooth, rich, and opulent. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry, supported by round, velvety tannins, coat the palate, which is full-bodied and fleshy. A touch of acidity adds a hint of liveliness and rusticity. The finish lingers with a long persistence, enhanced by fresh spices and herbaceous notes. Excellent value for money. Very pleasant to drink despite its unsuspected 15.5% ABV, best served at 16° with a Japanese gyudon.
