Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

A classic estate in the Mercurol region, which consistently produces supple wines meant to be enjoyed young. The Gaby cuvée is often more ambitious, though in some vintages with less substance, the oak can be a bit too pronounced. The reds here are more successful than the whites, as confirmed by our tasting of the 2017 vintage.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 89+/100 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The cedar and spices from the aging process accentuate the blackberries and cherries on the nose of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage Cuvée Gaby. The oak constrains the fruit, tightening the palate into a streamlined profile and limiting the wine’s current appeal. The hope is that it will behave like previous vintages and emerge from its current cocoon into something sweeter and more beautiful.

About the estate:

Located in Mercurol, the estate proudly flies the flag for the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, of which it is one of the most reliable producers, particularly with its Gaby vintages, which are more ambitious and complex.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on May 4, 2024

This 2020 vintage offers a beautiful expression of Syrah, with a refined and structured profile, in contrast to the more robust character of previous vintages. Soft, already well-integrated tannins highlight a complex bouquet of black cherries and plums, blueberries, and blackberries, complemented by sweet spices against an earthy, vanilla-tinged backdrop. The aromatic richness finds its extension on the palate, centered around a beautiful volume and a dense, smooth texture with a savory creaminess, while the spices—particularly peppery notes—return with a vengeance in the finish, enhanced by a hint of graphite. It is well-crafted with plenty of potential. After decanting, Gaby looked splendid alongside a Sisteron milk-fed lamb shoulder confit with honey and thyme during the May 1st family meal. Rating = 4.4.
