Domaine du Colombier - Hermitage 2020

age-worthy wine
role model

“The 2020 Hermitage, with notes of black olives and tar, continues these themes with flavors of purple berries and blackberries. This robust, medium- to full-bodied wine, with lively acidity and dusty tannins, will take time to come into its own. Viale’s Syrah comes from plots near the center of the appellation in Les Beaumes and Les Diognières (also spelled Dionnières).” (Wine Advocate 2022). A great bottle to set aside for a few years to fully appreciate its depth. Elegant and refined!

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

A classic estate in the Mercurol region, which consistently produces supple wines meant to be enjoyed young. The Gaby cuvée is often more ambitious, though in some vintages with less substance, the oak can be a bit too pronounced. The reds here are more successful than the whites, as confirmed by our tasting of the 2017 vintage.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Located in Mercurol, the estate proudly flies the flag for the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, of which it is one of the most reliable producers, particularly with its Gaby vintages, which are more ambitious and complex.
