“A simply breathtaking Hermitage!”

"The Hermitage Monier De La Sizeranne 2021 is an exceptional vintage that is truly worth discovering. Primarily destemmed (10% stems) and aged in 20% new oak barrels, it offers a magnificent nose of ripe redcurrants, black raspberries, smoked game, and violets, with some classic peppery and meaty notes emerging upon aeration. Medium-bodied and well-balanced, with good ripeness and lovely depth on the palate, this magnificent wine will be at its best over the next 15 to 20 years.” (Jeb Dunnuck 2024)

Wine rated (2026 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2024 guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers, those representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the estate:

Michel Chapoutier is now ably supported by his children, Mathilde and Maxime, in running the largest wine house in the Northern Rhône, a historic specialist in Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage. Chapoutier is, on the one hand, a major wine merchant, but also produces top-tier estate wines, with the estate’s vineyards having long been cultivated using biodynamic methods. The single-vineyard selections, the top of the range, perfectly reflect the owner’s philosophy: single-vineyard, single-varietal, and produced annually, they are above all a reflection of the terroir, in its best aspects as well as, at times, its excesses.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

This venerable (19th-century) and leading winery, propelled onto the international stage by Michel Chapoutier in the 1990s, offers a wide range of wines produced from its own vineyards (345 hectares, cultivated biodynamically) or from purchased grapes, across most of the Rhône Valley’s flagship appellations, as well as in Roussillon and Alsace. His children, Mathilde and Maxime, have recently joined the family business.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 93/100

Rated Estate (2023 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Under the Maison M. Chapoutier label, we feature wines from the wine merchant division of this two-century-old institution based in Tain-l'Hermitage. Michel Chapoutier, now joined by his daughter Mathilde, offers a very wide range of Rhône appellations here, with a production volume approaching one million bottles. But the Chapoutier name is also present in other regions (Champagne, Alsace, Languedoc, and even Australia), a testament to this family’s dynamism. While some vintages are compelling, others, on the other hand, are far more run-of-the-mill. This inconsistency leads us to remove the star from the house this year.

Rated: Recommended

About the wine:

Smoky, sweet red berries, with plum and dark fruits in the background. On the palate, there is a subtle smoky note, tight, firm, and refined tannins, along with lovely freshness and liveliness. It has plenty of energy, with a savory note in the background. An earthy note emerges on the ripe, sweet finish. The style remains quite dense and rich.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

A well-structured, textured, and lively Hermitage. On the nose, it reveals notes of wild berries, dried herbs, crushed stone, bark, and baking spices. It is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Full-bodied yet concentrated, with a velvety core of wild berries and spices. It is juicy, with a fresh and precise finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes certified by Demeter. Ready to drink or for aging.
