“Already Favorite the 2020 Guide, the estate has done it again. You don’t change a winning formula: an unadorned, unoaked expression of fruit that reveals itself through an exuberant nose of jammy red berries, spices, and licorice, and a broad, full-bodied palate bursting with fruit, both sunny and elegant in texture. A magnificent expression of the appellation with an added dimension of refinement. Already irresistible, but also with excellent aging potential.”(Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

In the historic Tavel region, the Maby family produces wines of consistent quality—always authentic, pleasant, and full-bodied. Led by the dynamic Richard Maby, the estate continues to evolve, with the wines gaining in precision each year. The vineyards are located in the communes of Tavel, the Lirac plateau, and the neighboring Côtes du Rhône. Reasonable prices and the consistent quality of the wines make this estate a safe bet on the current market, across all three wine types.

Rated wine (2021 guide): Favorite (Outstanding wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

Already Favorite the 2020 Guide, the estate has done it again. You don’t change a winning formula: an unadorned, wood-free expression of the fruit, revealing an unrestrained nose of red fruit jam, spices, and licorice, and a broad, fleshy palate bursting with fruit, both sunny and elegant in texture. A magnificent expression of the appellation with an added dimension of refinement. Already irresistible, but also with excellent aging potential.

About the estate:

This estate, known for its consistently high-quality wines—particularly its Lirac in all three varieties and its Tavel—was founded in 1950 by Armand Maby. In 2005, his grandson Richard took over the vineyard, which spans 53 hectares, mostly situated on the rounded pebbles of the Vallongue plateau; the vines are cultivated using natural methods and have been in the process of converting to organic farming since 2019. Since 2011, the eminent Rhône oenologist Philippe Cambie has been advising the estate.

A nose of overripe red fruit doesn't give me much hope for a wine with aging potential.

The best of the three Lirac wines I bought on the site. The tannins are well-integrated, the aromas more subtle—in short, more enjoyable than the other two at a similar price (La Loyane and Ussiglio).
