“Always a hit!”

"An Favorite among readers for this well-known cuvée. A wine whose evident fruit purity unfolds on the nose with notes of fresh blackcurrant, complemented by menthol and sweet spices (vanilla, tonka bean). The Syrah expresses itself majestically in a full-bodied, rich, smooth, and very long palate, supported by abundant, fine tannins, finishing with panache on an unexpected note of graphite. An authentic Saint-Joseph that is already delicious, and will remain so for a long time.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2022) Always a success!

Rated estate (2024 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

Jérôme Coursodon heads one of the renowned estates in Mauves. The Saint-Joseph wines from this part of the appellation (Mauves-Tournon) differ from those further north, around Sarras, even though all are produced on granite soils. The estate’s reds are often more fully developed than the whites.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

An Favorite among readers, this well-known cuvée is a wine whose evident fruit purity unfolds on the nose with notes of fresh blackcurrant, complemented by menthol and sweet spices (vanilla, tonka bean). The Syrah expresses itself majestically on the palate, which is full-bodied, rich, smooth, and very long, supported by abundant, refined tannins, finishing with panache on an unexpected note of graphite. An authentic Saint-Joseph that is already delicious and will remain so for a long time to come.

About the estate:

Established for four generations in Mauves, the birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation, Pierre Coursodon, the father, and Jérôme, the son—who took over in 1999—manage 17 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to Saint-Joseph, primarily the red variety. For many years, the wines from this estate have been featured in the Guide’s selections: with rare consistency, they are regular recipients of stars and Favorites designations.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

Dark, earthy, and rich with notes of espresso and black olives on the nose, the 2019 Saint Joseph Silice is a reasonably robust example of this cuvée. Ripe and with hints of chocolate, it is full-bodied and creamy, with supple tannins and a long finish reminiscent of raspberries.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 15/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the wine:

Rich and full-bodied, Silice Rouge nevertheless retains a juicy, crisp texture on the palate, with notes of dark fruit.

About the estate:

The Coursodon family has been in the wine business since the late 19th century. The estate owns vineyards in the renowned regions of Mauves, Tournon, Saint-Jean-de-Muzol, and Glun. The whites display a lovely character, without excessive oak. As for the reds, L'Olivaie comes from the heart of Sainte-Épine, in the village of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. However, the most recent vintages struck us as overly assertive, with very pronounced oak notes. The result is wines that are not always easy to drink. We regretfully have to remove one star from the estate’s rating.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on September 12, 2022

COURSODON embodies consistency in both quality and character, offering a full-bodied and remarkably balanced 100% Syrah. The fruit’s purity shines through on both the nose and the palate. Rich, savory flavors release delicious notes of blackberries and blackcurrants, complemented by sweet spices and a few smoky notes. They fill the mouth with great depth, coating it with a delicate, melt-in-the-mouth texture, and glide toward a voluptuous finish, enveloped by the sharp acidity of peppery raspberries. St-Jo, distinguished and refined, is already ready to drink but offers definite aging potential in this excellent 2019 vintage. A refined wine calls for refined food: venison tenderloin with Grand Veneur sauce, accompanied by a sauté of the first chanterelle mushrooms freshly picked in the Cévennes. A well-deserved 4.6 rating.
