“A multitude of aromas! Pomegranate syrup and fermented coffee beans, black raspberries and cherries cooked into a jam so thick you could cut it into cubes. That, in fact, is the impression this wine gives on the palate. A sculpture of black fruits shaped with sharp angles and carved from the flesh, introverted, juicy and balsamic, with subtle, barely perceptible spices. Enjoy it with confit pork chops. Best enjoyed while it’s still fruity.” (Jancis Robinson 2023)

About the estate:
The Ventoux region marks a new chapter in the professional lives of Laurence and Patrick Chêne. This labor of love, which began some twenty years ago, is based in an 18th-century farmhouse at the foot of this famous mountain in the Vaucluse. With deep-seated convictions and unwavering faith, this couple—passionate about rural life and Provence—has brought together the region’s native grape varieties, which had been all too quickly neglected. Century-old vines, a winery that honors tradition without neglecting innovation, guided by the discerning eye of Jérome Bressy: the result is evident in the glass—relevant and visionary for four vintages now. In addition to the usual varieties, a touch of Cinsault and the delicate Counoise round out a successful blend, aged in cement and wood.

Deep ruby color with hints of purple at the core. On the nose: horse stable, chocolate, and subtle dark fruit. The aromas are somewhat intense, reductive, and atypical. After an hour or two of aeration, the aromas become more approachable. On the palate, ripe dark fruit, blackberries, plums, plum compote, spices, white pepper, but also that stable note again. Furthermore, plenty of body, an enormous tannin structure of fine-grained tannins that will continue to mellow. A powerful, masculine wine. A bit too intense for my taste. Score: 15.5/20
