" In the same quality category, the 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Village Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (RI) comes exclusively from granite soils and is primarily made from Syrah aged in concrete tanks. It is a brilliant wine, arguably the best of this vintage. Blackcurrant cream, raspberry, spice, toast, imposing minerality, and floral nuances emerge here. This full-bodied wine is incredibly pure, wonderfully concentrated, and finishes beautifully. Produced in very limited quantities, don’t miss the opportunity to treat yourself to a few bottles of this marvel. It will continue to impress for another 15 years or more. » (Wine Advocate 2014 - Robert Parker)

Terroirs

The vineyards are located in the town of Lesquerde, the latest-ripening area in the department, on a gentle north-facing slope. The soils are granitic and iron-rich, predominantly stony at the top, and very poor in fertility.

Viticulture

traditional and meticulous

Grape Harvest

harvested by hand at peak ripeness. Low yields: 20 hl/ha.

Winemaking

100% destemmed and then vinified in small concrete tanks. Extraction is achieved through gentle pumping over or punching down during active fermentation, with a total maceration period of 4 to 5 weeks.

Livestock farming

Approximately 18 months: the first year in half-barrels of two different wines, followed by the final 6 months in concrete tanks.

Eye

Deep, rich color with purple highlights

Nose

complex and intense, with notes of ink, graphite, raspberry, and rockrose.

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more conventional and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Michel Chapoutier, a prominent and prolific figure in the Rhône Valley wine industry, has invested heavily in his estate in Latour de France (which spans over 100 hectares of vineyards, extending into neighboring villages such as Lesquerde, as well as a few plots in the Côte Vermeille). True to his reputation for perfectionism, he produces affordable wines that offer excellent value for money.

About the estate:

Michel Chapoutier’s outpost in Roussillon is a worthy extension of his operations in the Rhône Valley. The focus is on the same grape varieties—Grenache and Syrah, in varying proportions depending on the terroir—and the overall quality is very good, with the single-vineyard selections particularly notable for their excellence and limited production volumes. "My view is that Roussillon is like the northern Rhône within Languedoc-Roussillon," Chapoutier said during our February tasting in the small village of Latour-de-France. He and the rest of his team are very optimistic about the prospects for the 2017 and 2018 vintages, which they describe as excellent. It should be noted that while Chapoutier primarily produces dry wines in Roussillon, he has not abandoned traditional styles.
