Domaine Modat - Côtes du Roussillon Comme Avant 2019
16,5+/20
Jancis Robinson
"Memories, memories..."
"It smells a little like meat, leather, and cooked fruit. It doesn't have the immediate fruity freshness of other Modat reds; it's a little dull and the tannins are drying. But left in the glass for half an hour, it began to change. Fresh fruit timidly emerges from the heavier drape of cooked fruit, while sage and rosemary flowers offer a fragrance that contrasts with the savory weight. With air and decanting, Modat's characteristic elegance emerges. This wine really deserves to be decanted." (Jancis Robinson 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2021 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Philippe Modat compensated for the thanklessness of his job as a clerk at the Commercial Court by reviving his wild gneiss lands in Caramany, with the help of his tireless manager Laurent Abet. Today, his sons Quentin and Louis have taken over, with many projects in mind. Impeccable viticulture, respectful winemaking, and the development of a range of wines: everything is falling into place to help the estate grow and evolve. Promising wines, a cellar full of ideas, and a welcome breath of fresh air blowing through an appellation that sorely needs it.

Rated estate (2021 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)
About the estate:
Of Catalan origin, Philippe Modat, a magistrate, is a knowledgeable wine lover, like his father, who also became a winegrower. This passion led to the creation of an estate in the Agly Valley in 2006: 27 hectares of vines on a plateau at an altitude of 300 meters, in conversion to organic farming since 2011 (8 hectares biodynamic) and an ecologically designed cellar equipped with photovoltaic cells, inaugurated in 2008.

About wine:
It seems a little warmer in alcohol than the 13.5% indicated on the label. It smells a little of meat, leather, and cooked fruit. It lacks the immediate fruity freshness of other Modat reds, it is a little sullen and the tannins are drying. But left in the glass for half an hour, it began to change its face. Fresh fruit timidly emerges from the heavier drape of cooked fruit, while sage and rosemary flowers offer a fragrance that contrasts with the savory weight. With air and decanting, Modat's characteristic elegance emerges. This wine is definitely worth decanting.
