Bettane & Desseauve

“A young vineyard, about a dozen years old, that produces a wine with good structure and opulence, featuring notes of candied orange. It was still somewhat austere when we tasted it in March; it will need to be cellared or decanted. ” (The Bettane & Desseauve Guide to French Wines 2016). A supple cuvée, full-bodied on the palate, of exceptional purity with richness and depth, and a beautiful balance… A truly delightful bottle!

Wine rated (2016 guide) 15/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2023 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the wine:

A young vineyard, about a dozen years old, that produces a wine with good structure and richness, featuring notes of candied orange. It was still somewhat austere when we tasted it in March, so it’s best to let it age a bit or decant it.

About the estate:

The Magnins are among the most iconic figures in the Savoyard wine region. These two dedicated winemakers, who have been certified organic since 2012, decided to downsize the estate to three hectares starting with the 2018 harvest. While their lineup is small, both their white and red wines are absolutely stunning.

Rated estate (2023 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

This artisanal estate has played a pivotal role in the contemporary history of the Savoyard vineyards. Although the vineyard area has shrunk, meticulous work—both in the vineyard and in the cellar—enables Louis Magnin to achieve exceptional expression in both reds and whites. A perfectionist, he demonstrates a consistency across his various vintages that few producers in this region can match. Less opulent than in the past, the whites emphasize mineral intensity. Among the Mondeuses—flamboyant yet meant for aging—we continue to prefer (often, though not this year!) the vintages aged in tanks over those aged in barrels.
