Château du Cèdre
Château du Cèdre, located in the South-West of France, is owned by Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe . Here, they vinify and age their wines with precision, using tried-and-tested techniques adapted to their soils and grape varieties. Château du Cèdre produces Malbec wines: fruity or long-keeping wines that explore all the facets of the Cahors terroir.
Château du Cèdre's 3 vineyard plots are planted on the two best soil types in the Cahors appellation. The largest parcel, 12.5 hectares, faces south-west, and is situated on a cone of limestone scree that is still moving. The soil, very stony clay-limestone, is called "Tran". It plays a very important thermal and hygrometric role, and the wines produced on this soil have very fine tannins and are particularly straight and long. The other two plots (5.5 and 7.5 hectares, facing south) are composed predominantly of pebbles, mixed with reddish ferruginous sand on the surface and clay and silica at depth. Wines here are more powerful and higher in alcohol. Malbec is a low-productivity, labor-intensive grape variety that thrives on poor soils. Planted on the great terroirs of Quercy, it produces floral, fruity wines with aromas of violets, red fruit, black fruit and blackberry, with plenty of flesh and length. As for Château du Cèdre's Viognier, it has all the qualities required by the terroir to produce a natural wine: it withstands high summer temperatures contrasted by cool nights.
