"A person of integrity and refinement! (RVF)"

“Such delicate and precise beauty. A broad spectrum of aromas with a wealth of floral notes, melon, and fresh quince. The medium-bodied to full-bodied palate is as concentrated as it is elegant. Very fresh and silky for a grape variety that tends toward opulence and warmth.” (James Suckling 2024)

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100

Rated estate (2024 guide): 4*Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Jacky Barthelmé puts it bluntly: “We’re very happy with 2021 because it was a winemaker’s vintage. Those who were out in the vineyards got the grapes. It didn’t happen on its own. ” And it’s clear that tasting the lineup proves him right: Pinot Noirs that are as successful as ever, Rieslings of great beauty, and even Pinot Gris wines that show a drier balance than in the past—which can only delight us.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 94/100 (Outstanding wine)

About the wine:

Bottled in July 2023, the 2022 Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Pinot Gris is very clear and intense, yet fresh and floral on the nose, with a pure bouquet that combines aromas of ripe pome fruits with stony notes. On the palate, full-bodied, round, and elegant, this is a rich, intense, and powerful Pinot that is also briny and well-structured—yet not at all alcoholic despite its stated 14% alcohol content and 4.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. The richness and intensity are balanced by mineral character and the Pinot’s fine tannins. This is a dry, food-friendly Pinot from a great vineyard site with 40-year-old vines. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in April 2024.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 95/100

Rated estate (2024 guide): 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

The Furstentum Pinot Gris surprises with its softness and creamy texture on the palate at first, but its spicy edge quickly takes over, revealing a distinctive and refined character.

About the estate:

The estate, born from the union of the Mann and Barthelmé families—two distinguished lines of winemakers dating back to the 17th century—produces wines of the very highest caliber, emblematic of the finest that Alsace has to offer. Maurice, an inspired biodynamic winemaker and occasional dowser, has brought purity to the wines through meticulous work in the vineyard. Jacky and his son Antoine possess a highly refined sense of winemaking for both whites and reds. The wines’ balance, approachability, and depth make them benchmarks for all wine lovers. Their four reds rank among the very best of Alsace and are among the finest in France. This success has now made them rare wines.

About the wine:

The 2022 Furstentum Grand Cru Pinot Gris has a hint of smokiness in its reserved nose. On the palate, the Comice pear flavor is subtly ripe. A hint of brightness brings freshness and a subtle touch of sweetness that only adds to the suppleness and balance of this sweet yet pleasantly dry Pinot Gris. The residual sugar is just 4.8 g/L. (Bone-dry)
