“A benchmark Grand Cru!”

Grand Cru for Pinot Noir since the 2022 vintage, Hengst hails from the Wintzenheim terroir. The Grand H reveals a complex bouquet of spices, fresh raspberries, dried rose, and smoky notes. The palate is lively and delicate, with a silky texture, lovely freshness, and a distinct energy derived from vibrant acidity. The salty, lingering finish will perfectly complement a rib of beef.

Rated estate (2024 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)

About the estate:

Jacky Barthelmé puts it bluntly: “We’re very happy with 2021 because it was a winemaker’s vintage. Those who were out in the vineyards got the grapes. It didn’t happen on its own. ” And it’s clear that tasting the range proves him right: Pinot Noirs as successful as ever, Rieslings of great beauty, and even Pinot Gris wines that display a drier balance than in the past—which can only delight us.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 97/100 (2023 vintage)

Rated estate (2024 guide) 3*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)

About the estate:

The estate, born from the union of the Mann and Barthelmé families—two distinguished lines of winemakers dating back to the 17th century—produces wines of the very highest caliber, emblematic of the finest that Alsace has to offer. Maurice, an inspired biodynamic winemaker and occasional dowser, has brought purity to the wines through meticulous work in the vineyard. Jacky and his son Antoine possess a highly refined sense of winemaking for both whites and reds. The balance of the wines, their approachability, and their depth make them models for all wine lovers. Their four reds are at the pinnacle of Alsatian production and among the finest in France. This success has now made them rare wines.
