"Elegant and intense!"

A wine with a volcanic nose, exuding notes of flint and wet stones. On the palate, its pronounced minerality offers beautiful elegance and delicacy. A complex palette of smoky, spicy, and herbal aromas unfolds, leading to a dry, briny finish. Its length is impressive, yet never heavy. Like most 2021 vintages, it will need time to fully develop and reach a more fruity aromatic expression. An elegant and intense Rangen, embodying the energy of this terroir!

About the estate:

For three decades, this estate—a model of Alsatian winemaking—has told the story of the Humbrecht family. Léonard, the founder, was a visionary who acquired the region’s finest terroirs, including the famous Rangen. Olivier, his son, brilliantly introduced the principles of biodynamics as early as the 1990s. About the estate:

An tireless ambassador for his wines and the region, Olivier Humbrecht—the first Frenchman to earn the Master of Wine designation—has long understood the importance of work in the vineyard. He converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 1999 and is one of its leading advocates, serving as president of the Biodyvin label. This approach to viticulture has allowed him to avoid botrytis and reduce alcohol levels. The wines have evolved over the years and now exhibit a decidedly dry style, while the large casks age them several meters underground. Like all great Alsatian wines, they reach their full potential after a few years or decades of aging. The Clos Windsbuhl is a must-try, and the Rangen de Thann really comes into its own with age. Pierre-Emile, Olivier’s son, has just joined the estate. The excellence of this production, respected by all, has earned this iconic estate a place in the pantheon of our guide with a fourth star.

About the wine:

The 2021 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru comes from the famous steep, dark volcanic rock of the Rangen, with some sandstone inclusions. The soil is rich in potassium, which buffers the wine’s pH, making the acidity less sharp while lending the wines great power. The oldest Riesling plots are up to 60 years old; the youngest vines are 45 years old. The color is golden. Beneath the reductive notes lies a spicy smokiness, with greengage and white pepper. There is something fluid, intense, compact, and concentrated about it that seems to possess total verticality, sinking deep into the rock. The wine displays a luminous yet balanced citrus freshness and is crystal clear. Give it time—it will be sensational. The finish is bone-dry and salty. (Bone-dry)

The quintessential dry, mineral Riesling? Incredibly smoky and salty, with a vibrant freshness of Amalfi lemon. Stunning vitality and flinty minerality in an incredibly concentrated, medium-bodied palate. A finish as sharp as a samurai sword—ultra-straight and crisp. Great potential. Made from biodynamically grown grapes certified by Biodyvin. Ready to drink now, but best enjoyed starting in 2025. Tasted during the Zind-Humbrecht Grand Cru Rangen vertical tasting in November 2023.

A magnificent wine that’s staying in the cellar for now. In my opinion, it’s not ready to be opened yet.
