“‘It flows and sparkles with purity. What an incredibly invigorating wine!’ (Vinous)”
“The chalky minerality of this compact, tightly structured dry Riesling is absolutely extraordinary. Its elegance and very lively acidity on the palate, combined with its medium body, make it unique in Alsace. The mirabelle plum fruit emerges very slowly.” (James Suckling 2025)

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100
Rated estate (2024 guide): 5 stars (Exceptional producers who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)
About the estate:
For three decades, this estate has been a model of Alsatian viticulture, telling the story of the Humbrecht family. Léonard, the founder, was a visionary who acquired the region’s finest terroirs, including the famous Rangen. Olivier, his son, brilliantly introduced the principles of biodynamics as early as the 1990s. And today, Pierre-Émile, who joined the estate during the very challenging 2021 vintage, continues their legacy, particularly with the latest acquisitions on the Sommerberg.

Wine rated (2026 guide) 96/100
Rated estate (2024 guide) 4*Stars (These represent the pinnacle of French winemaking. The finest terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical experience)
About the wine:
More reserved in its youth, Clos Windsbuhl is harvested at just the right stage of ripeness, yet remains vibrant and balanced, with a brilliantly lively finish.
About the estate:
An tireless ambassador for his wines and the region, Olivier Humbrecht—the first Frenchman to earn the title of Master of Wine—has long understood the importance of vineyard work. He converted the estate to biodynamic farming in 1999 and is one of its leading advocates, serving as president of the Biodyvin label. This approach has allowed him to avoid botrytis and reduce alcohol levels. The wines have evolved over the years and now exhibit a decidedly dry style, with the large casks aging them several meters underground. Like all great Alsace wines, they reach their full potential after a few years or decades of aging. The Clos Windsbuhl is a must-try, and the Rangen de Thann grows in character with time. Pierre-Emile, Olivier’s son, has just joined the estate. The excellence of this production, respected by all, allows this iconic property to enter the pantheon of our guide with a fourth star.

About the wine:
The 2023 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl comes from a vineyard located in the forest, on Triassic limestone soil. It sparkles delightfully with a delicate, promising effervescence that is both exhilarating and thrilling. On the palate, it offers a wonderful blend of the juiciest, crispest apple and the creamiest lemon. Everything about this wine is long, fresh, lively, and sunny, with a wonderful depth of freshness and a true sense of serenity. It flows and shines with purity. What an incredibly invigorating wine! (Very dry)

About the wine:
The chalky minerality of this compact, tightly structured dry Riesling is absolutely extraordinary. Its elegance and lively acidity on the palate, combined with its medium body, make it unique in Alsace. Notes of mirabelle plum emerge very gradually. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Can be enjoyed now, but will reach its peak starting in 2027.

Wine rated (2025 guide) 95/100
About the wine:
This Riesling comes from Hunawihr, grown on Muschelkalk soil—a limestone terroir that is less intense than Oligocene soils. Delicate in character, the bouquet of Clos Windsbuhl reveals notes of grapefruit and lemongrass, complemented by a hint of flint. With good density, the wine is lively, featuring a touch of salinity and a slightly effervescent quality on the palate. The wine has substance and is carried by an elegant acidity that ensures harmony and character. A wine with character! 2028–2045 95/100
