Château Bonnet - Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes 2018
90/100
Wine Enthusiast
This expertise is once again evident in this Gamay vintage, made from vines averaging 60 years of age and grown on weathered granite, foothills, and ancient alluvial soils. Notes of violet, cherry, and kirsch emerge on the nose, giving way to a fruity, full-bodied palate with fine yet distinct tannins. It’s full of character and has everything to please.

About the estate:
Located on the border between Burgundy and Beaujolais, this château takes its name from Sieur Bonnet, a councilman of the city of Mâcon, who built a manor house there in 1630 where Lamartine later stayed. Acquired by the Perrachon family in 1973, the estate comprises 22 hectares of vineyards. Pierre-Yves Perrachon, who has led the estate since 1988, was joined in 2013 by his daughter Charlotte, an enologist. He has also partnered with a winemaker from the Mâconnais region to expand his operations through a wine merchant firm, Bourgogne Sélect.

An excellent entry-level wine from the Moulin-à-Vent AOP, featuring a Gamay with notes of ripe red fruit and a rich, indulgent palate. I highly recommend it.

High in alcohol for a Beaujolais, quite closed, with the typical flavor of Gamay; best tasted in at least two years
