Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Christine and Jean-Yves Millaire farm their vineyards—located in Canon-Fronsac (7 hectares), Fronsac (2.5 hectares), and Bordeaux—using biodynamic methods. The Canon-Fronsac stands out for its tannic structure, which complements the fruit—ripened to perfection—without sacrificing its refreshing finish. It offers good value for the price.

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2020 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

A vineyard known for its consistent quality, established in the 1950s by Jean Garnier, which was leased out between 1979 and 1998 until the arrival of his grandson, Jean-Yves Millaire, who took over its direct management. The vineyard (30 ha today) is cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods (certified in 2009 and 2012, respectively).

Wine rated (2021 guide) 92/100

Rated Estate (2021 Guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

Vibrant tannins that let the fruit take a back seat to a radiant texture.

About the estate:

With nearly 50 hectares of vineyards now cultivated using biodynamic methods, Jean-Yves Millaire proves wrong those who still believe that just because a producer is small, they’re necessarily better. The somewhat aggressive extraction methods of the early days (“it was the trend”) have been replaced by infusions. Millaire even manages to release a Beaujolais-style “primeur” in December: the pure Loupiot fruit juice, a sulfur-free blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, perfect for sipping... His aging methods are also pushing the boundaries: primarily large oak vats, a few amphorae, and barrels to best suit the different soil profiles, which are capable of supporting old, forgotten grape varieties; the winemaker is developing massale planting projects to create new flavors. In the meantime, his merit is evident in his Canon-Fronsac and Fronsac wines, which have earned him a place in this guide today.
