Sylvain Dussort - Cuvée des Ormes 2019
16,5/20
Jancis Robinson
"The estate's flagship wine"
“A full-bodied aroma of apple peel. Excellent, lively acidity—far from unappealing! Quite unusual but very enjoyable. Not particularly long on the palate, but clean and satisfying. I think I should rate this wine 16.5 to draw attention to its distinctive character. Almost spritzy. I really like it, even if it’s not classic. ” (Jancis Robinson). The estate’s flagship cuvée, “Les Ormes,” is made from vines ranging in age from 35 to over 60 years, selected from specific plots in the commune of Meursault. These old vines and this little-known terroir make it a sublime and highly sought-after white. Sublime!

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to expectations for its appellation(s))
About the estate:
Born to parents who were a winegrower and a cooper, Sylvain Dussort and his wife settled in the area in 1982 and currently cultivate 6.5 hectares of regional and village appellations in Meursault and Chorey-lès-Beaune. Their farming methods eschew systematic pest control, and winemaking relies solely on indigenous yeasts, following Burgundian tradition with barrel aging. Sylvain is also a champion of the new Bourgogne Côte d’Or appellation, which he proudly adopted starting with the 2017 vintage.

A slightly woody, spring-like nose. On the palate, it’s all freshness and lightness, with a clean texture, white fruit aromas, and understated aging. Curiously, there’s a slight sensation of effervescence and citrus bitterness. The finish is short and briny, highlighted by a hint of verbena. “Baby Meursault”? For that, it would have needed a bit more body, density, and finesse. On this last point, the Côte d’Or by Ph. BOUZEREAU comes closer, with beautiful depth and a more accomplished harmony. Score = 3.7. Served at 10° with scallops from Saint-Brieuc Bay, pan-seared in champagne.
