Domaine Ortola - Ôde à la Main blanc 2021
“Delicious!”
This Mediterranean wine, a blend of 85% Vermentino and 15% Viognier, is characterized by its delicate and expressive character. On the palate, it is smooth and round, with a lovely richness and mineral notes that lend it a long finish. This lovely white wine pairs well with scallops or salmon tartare.

About the estate:
Just outside Narbonne and on the shores of the Bages Lake, the Quartouze plateau is a historic Languedoc terroir with soils composed of rounded pebbles. The bishops of the Aude region once owned vineyards there. In 1983, engineer Georges Ortola purchased an abandoned vineyard, followed by a second one five years later. Today, he and his children, Hélène and Nelson, cultivate 120 hectares using biodynamic methods. His vineyard serves as grazing land for sheep in the winter.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on May 25, 2022
While the attack is crisp and lively thanks to the dominant Vermentino, the mid-palate is round and full-bodied, yet linear, with flavors of white fruit enhanced by a hint of citrus. The finish, though somewhat lacking in length, offers a certain freshness due to pleasant bitter notes nuanced with floral and minty tones. Perhaps for the blend, it would have been wiser to use white and/or grey Grenache rather than Viognier? Score: 3.4. The combination of richness and minerality in this unpretentious white wine was a perfect match for a convivial Catalan sarsuela shared with the family.
