Formerly known as La Main de l'Homme, this Languedoc red—made from a classic southern blend and vinified without sulfur—continues to charm. Rich, distinctive, and elegant, it is built on a foundation of red fruit, enhanced by notes of spice and pepper. Its freshness lends it a light, airy balance. A true Languedoc classic!

About the estate:

Just outside Narbonne and on the shores of the Bages Lake, the Quartouze plateau is a historic Languedoc terroir with soils composed of rounded pebbles. The bishops of the Aude region once owned vineyards there. In 1983, engineer Georges Ortola purchased an abandoned vineyard, followed by a second one five years later. Today, he and his children, Hélène and Nelson, cultivate 120 hectares using biodynamic methods. His vineyard serves as grazing land for sheep in the winter.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Published on March 12, 2024

A superb wine with a lovely Southern character, offering good balance, wonderful subtlety, and great complexity, blending ripe red fruits and gentle spices with hints of kirsch, smoky aromas, and a touch of ash. The palate, with its substantial body, is smooth and delightfully silky. The intensely long finish is highlighted by a hint of acidity and a pinch of pepper, which lend energy and make the wine more approachable. Very well crafted with fine, youthful tannins, all of which bodes well for its future development, much to our delight. It pairs beautifully with regional cuisine, such as wild boar stew served with white beans. Rating = 4.3.
