Domaine de Baronarques - Limoux La Capitelle blanc 2023

A deep understanding of the terroir (43 hectares of clay-limestone soil) enables the production of well-rounded wines. The blend varies from vintage to vintage, combining Atlantic grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon) with Mediterranean varieties (Syrah, Malbec, Grenache). The Chardonnays produce some of the appellation’s finest white wines. A new barrel cellar, inaugurated in 2018, supports the estate’s growth and ambitions. Managed like a classified growth, it is a sure bet.

Formerly owned by the Abbey of Saint-Polycarpe in the 17th century, this estate (now 43 hectares) was acquired in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (Château Mouton-Rothschild in Pauillac) and her two sons, who completely renovated both the vineyards and the winery, turning it into one of the appellation’s most reliable wines.

Aromas of pear, fresh apricot, heady flowers, and stony minerality. The palate is voluptuous and viscous, marked by notes of peach pit, with a delightful bitterness at the center of the mouth.

A lovely, fruity, aromatic, and fresh nose that’s vibrant and full-bodied. This wine benefits from being decanted. It features notes of vibrant white peach and pear combined with hints of ripe citrus, along with subtle hints of fresh, juicy apricot, a discreet hint of zest, and a subtle hint of kumquat. The palate is beautifully structured, balanced, and offers a fresh framework, richness, roundness, and a luscious quality, along with a tangy acidity. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy pear and crushed nectarine combined with hints of kumquat and a touch of crushed white berries, a subtle hint of verbena, and a delicate note of fresh aromatic herbs. A very subtle hint of minerality and a lovely, slightly buttery character. Beautiful freshness.

It displays alluring yellow and green hues that almost compete for visual attention, indicating a certain tension in this wine between the richer, riper, and fuller notes and the more structured and defining acidity. This is reflected in the fruit profile: pear and hints of peach and nectarine on one hand, and quince, mandarin orange, and freshly squeezed lemon on the other. The two aspects come together in beautiful harmony, offering a seductive, appealing, yet elegant and refined introduction to this great wine.
