Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2025 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

A thorough understanding of the terroir (43 hectares of clay-limestone soil) enables the production of accomplished wines. The blend varies according to the vintage, between Atlantic grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon) and Mediterranean varieties (Syrah, Malbec, Grenache). The Chardonnays produce one of the best whites in the appellation. A new barrel cellar inaugurated in 2018 ensures the estate's progress and ambition. Managed like a classified growth, it is a safe bet.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly awarded by the guide)

About the estate:

Formerly owned by Saint-Polycarpe Abbey in the 17th century, this estate (now covering 43 hectares) was acquired in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (Château Mouton-Rothschild in Pauillac) and her two sons, who completely renovated the vineyard and winery, turning it into one of the appellation's most reliable performers.

Wine rated 90/100

About wine:

Intense purple color with violet highlights and an almost black core. Expressive nose with a slightly reductive attack, opening up nicely to aromas reminiscent of blackberries and blackcurrants, ripe black cherries, floral notes of violet, with hints of raw meat in the background. On the palate, it is well-structured with ripe tannins, juicy fruit, black berries and black stone fruits, notes of iron and minerality on the finish, with very good length.

Wine rated 92/100

About wine:

We can assume that the higher percentage of Syrah here takes this wine outside the Limoux appellation. If this is the case, it is an excellent choice that reflects the estate's philosophy of not allowing appellation rules, developed under different climatic conditions, to limit the expression of the terroir. This is particularly successful in a vintage that was not easy. This wine is wild, floral, herbaceous, and quite delicate, with the natural power of Syrah slightly attenuated in favor of freshness. But it still retains the distinctive smoky character of Syrah, which reminds me more of a good Saint-Joseph!
