Wine rated (2026 guide) 90/100
Rated estate (2026 guide): 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
The Château is always delicious and crisp, while remaining true to the character of a lovely, restrained Chinon.
About the estate:
The estate has been in the Bonnaventure family since the Middle Ages, when the vineyards of the historic Clos de Turpenay were planted. In 1988, Étienne and Pascale de Bonnaventure undertook the expansion of the estate. They revived the spirit of the great wines of Beaumont, the first step in the Chinon appellation on the Loire side, where Cabernets—under a more oceanic influence—gain a delicate, intricate character and refined fruitiness compared to those from the eastern part of the appellation. Today, Château de Coulaine produces a brilliant range of organic Chinons that combine fresh fruit with an elegant texture. The vintages do not obscure the expression of the terroirs: the suppleness (Beaumont’s clay and silica) in Château de Coulaine and the slender freshness of the clay-limestone soils in Les Picasses, the sun-kissed density in Clos de Turpenay (south-facing), and the chalky character of La Diablesse (in its old-vine version, north-facing). Jean de Bonnaventure, the son of Étienne and Pascale, who took over in January 2017, has brought new energy to defining these meticulously crafted and precise wines while preserving their unique character and sensibility. The faithful expression of the latest vintages deserves a second star.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on April 5, 2025
Behind its charmingly old-fashioned label lies a young, round, and graceful Chinon characterized by its freshness. It is animated by a floral and rich fruitiness, framed by firm yet mellow and velvety tannins, with no oaky notes. An impressive, subtly minty finish rounds out a pleasant tasting experience. It’s attractively priced and easy to pair, especially for a family meal with a roast pork with old-fashioned mustard served with potatoes and oven-roasted onions, or with a traditional roast free-range chicken. Rating = 4.
