Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 1 star (A high-quality, recommended wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

With a long family history, the Bruneau-Dupuy estate is now run by Sylvain. Since 2012, the vineyard has been in the process of converting to organic farming. The estate covers an area of 20 hectares, sheltered to the north by the forest. Half of the estate is located on south-facing slopes, covered with old vines planted in clay-limestone soils. The wines from these vines are full-bodied and have a long finish. The other half of the vineyard is planted in sandy soils, which produces lighter, fruitier wines best enjoyed young. At under 15 euros, the wines offer good value for money.

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2025) 1*Star (Very successful wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the wine:

Vines that are 60 years old and a year of barrel aging have shaped this serious 2022 vintage, which is dominated by its aging profile but can rely on its firm tannins and sun-kissed fruit to age well.

About the estate:

Representing the third generation of winemakers at this estate, which has consistently produced high-quality wines, Sylvain Bruneau, who took over in 1998, converted his vineyard—spanning some twenty hectares—to organic farming.

Ligers Competition - Loire Valley Wines

Concours des Ligers - Vins du Val de Loire

Wine rated (2025 guide) Silver Medal - Loire Valley Wines

About the wine:

The wine’s brilliant, deep ruby-red color gives way to an expressive and pleasant nose that combines aromas of red and black fruit jams (strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant) with vanilla and spicy notes (pepper). The palate, with a supple attack, offers a full-bodied texture, smoothness, and volume, along with fruity (jam-like), spicy, and woody aromas that envelop the present yet well-integrated tannins, which then linger in an elegant, powerful, and long finish. “Great potential.” A superb Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil.

Review by Mr. Gilles D. Posted on March 2, 2026

With its fruity style and good body, S. Bruneau presents a superb blend of finesse and richness, infused with tart and stewed berries, supported by a mineral backbone that lends a lovely freshness. The tight, well-integrated tannins, with a silky texture, prolong the deep and smooth finish. Offered at a reasonable price, this elegant and generous bottle is best reserved for the dinner table to accompany an oven-roasted Salers tenderloin and a gratin dauphinois. A score of 4.3 for this Top Pick.
