Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil
Everything you need to know about Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil wine
The cultivation of vines in Saint Nicholas of Bourgueil probably dates back to Roman times, but it was around the Abbey of Bourgueil, founded in 990, that the Bourgueil vineyards, including those of Saint-Nicolas, really began to develop. The Breton grape variety made its appearance there in 1152, thanks to the political union of Anjou and Aquitaine. The appellation area follows the contours of the commune of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. The vineyards are located on the border between Touraine and Anjou, in the western extension of Bourgueil, on the high terrace of the right bank of the Loire. Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil was designated an AOC by a decree dated July 31, 1937.The Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil appellation covers an area of 1,000 hectares and produces 56,000 hectoliters annually, 2% of which is rosé. Most of the area is located on a large terrace of ancient alluvial deposits, with deep soils consisting of sand and gravel. Above the terraces, a third of the vineyard extends over a tuffeau (Turonian chalk) hillside covered with sand. The Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil vineyard opens widely onto the Loire, which, at this point, with the confluence of the Vienne, takes on exceptional dimensions and allows maritime influences to penetrate freely. The climate is therefore slightly more oceanic than in Bourgueil, with the same forest-covered hillside protecting the well-exposed slopes from the north winds.
The grape varieties authorized for the production of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wine are Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The latter is permitted up to a limit of 10% of the blend, but is rarely used. Graves wines mature quickly, while Tuffeau wines develop fully after 5 to 10 years of aging. Some very fine wines are produced by the Yannick Amirault Estate, the Cotelleraie Estate or the Castle of Chivalry.
From theBourgeuil AOCSaint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil wine is the only wine produced in the commune, with a plantation covering 1,000 hectares. It is theAOP of the Loire Valley to blend in with the contours of the commune of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. Located between Angers and Tours, this plantation offers a unique grape variety for wine, as the vines manage to flourish even with the delicate composition of the soil.
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wine, a product of Touraine
The appellation Saint Nicholas of Bourgueil was founded in 1937 and is one of the few municipal names in France. The Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil red wine remains the only grape variety in the Loire Valley to be considered a king. The fruity taste that envelops each bottle gives it a truly refined aroma. However, this wine should not be confused with its neighbor Bourgueil, which has an appellation cultivated with many grape varieties. The Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil Prize is also different from simple Bourgeuil wine.
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wine, three different terroirs
The distinctive feature of this wine lies in the number of terroirs that compose it. In fact, three terroirs shape the wines of a single appellation. Several soils with different geological characteristics give this wine its true identity. The first terroir covers 700 hectares and consists of sandy-gravelly soil. The wines from the vines planted on this land are particularly supple on the palate and express aromas of red fruits.
As for the second terroir, it covers an area of 300 hectares on the hillside. The soil is clay-limestone, as it is made up of former tuffeau stone quarries. The remains of these quarries are now used as cellars for Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wines. The wines produced from this plantation are quite complex with a full-bodied, very aromatic garnet-purple color. The taste features notes of blackcurrant, licorice, blackberry, and spices, while remaining intense and powerful.
The last terroir consists of 100 hectares of loamy soil. Also known as "la Taille," this terroir produces a fruity wine with an intense color that is fresh and supple.
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wine, in the heart of the Loire Valley vineyards
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil is a wine produced in the Loire Valley vineyards. The Loire Valley stretches from west to east, from the mouth of the Loire River in Nantes and Saint-Nazaire to central France, in Nevers and Bourges.
The Loire Valley thus produces a wide variety of wines within the same vineyard. The Atlantic Ocean brings mildness, while the climate of northern France brings freshness.
The Loire Valley is divided into four main wine-growing sub-regions, which are, from west to east: the Nantes region, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and the Centre Loire. Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wines belong to Touraine. They are produced in Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department, a few kilometers north of the Loire River.
The subsoil plays a key role in the profile of Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wines. It consists of sand and gravel, but also clay.
The Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil appellation covers an area of approximately 1,000 hectares.
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wines
The Loire Valley vineyards mainly produce white wines. Red and rosé wines are produced in equal proportions. Sparkling wines are also produced.
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wines are red and rosé wines. Red wine dominates, accounting for over 98% of production. Two grape varieties are used to make Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil red wine: Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is used in smaller quantities, accounting for less than 10% of the blend. A large part of Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil red wine production is single-varietal, made from Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc is emblematic of the wines of the Loire Valley and Touraine for the Chinon, Saumur, and Bourgueil appellations, although it is also found in Bordeaux and Languedoc. Rosé wine is made from Cabernet Franc.
The main vineyards producing wine under the Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil appellation are Domaines des Vallettes, Pithon-Paillé, Yannick Amirault, Frédéric Mabileau, Pascal and Alain Lorieux, etc.
Tasting Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil wines
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil red wines are fruity, lively, and light, making them easy to drink. They are best served at a temperature between 54°F and 57°F. Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil red wine has a deep red color with purple highlights. The Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties produce dry red wines with moderate alcohol content.
These grape varieties produce wines with high acidity. Cabernet Franc is less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon. Both varieties give their wines a fruity profile of red berries that can be detected on the nose: blackberry, blackcurrant, and raspberry. These are complemented by aromas of grass and green pepper.
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil red wines are medium-aged wines. They can be enjoyed with a wide variety of dishes and are easy to pair. They go well with poultry, pork, and cheese. Goat cheese, a specialty of the Loire Valley, is a perfect accompaniment to Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil.
Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil rosé remains relatively unknown. Salmon pink in color, it has a nose of exotic fruits such as mango and pineapple and a fairly round palate. It is best served chilled, at 9°C. Ideal in summer, it can nevertheless be enjoyed throughout the year with spring vegetables, poultry, fish, and goat cheese.
