Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A high-quality, recommendable wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
The arrival of the talented Jean-Philippe Louis as winemaker has breathed new life into this sleeping beauty of the Saumur region, where the soil is clay-limestone and the sun shines generously. The 2018 vintages herald the estate’s resurgence, with a red cuvée from old vines offering rich, full-bodied fruit. The Clos-des-Oratoriens, a white wine, requires more time to develop. Stay tuned!

A bouquet of white pome fruits, complemented by citrus and white flowers, set against a distinctly graphite-like backdrop and featuring a beautifully crisp acidity. It has it all: freshness, finesse, and vibrancy galvanized by lovely salty notes that coat the palate, before being lifted by beautiful bitter notes in a crystal-clear finish that is incredibly thirst-quenching and invigorating. The only downside: a 30% price hike in just three years! This simple, refined Muscadet was chosen to highlight the briny notes of a lunch with fishing friends at the La Tremblade fishing hut, ready to devour a platter of Fines de Claire oysters from Noirmoutier, followed by a hearty and flavorful dish of spaghetti alle vongole. Rating = 4.

Lacks depth, has a rather off-putting petrol-like note, and a texture that's nothing to write home about... Disappointing
