Vinho Verde
Legend has it that Vinho Verde wines were the first Portuguese wines to be exported to Europe. In the 16th and 17th centuries, wines from the Minho and Lima valleys were regularly shipped to Northern Europe in the same boats that carried cod and other processed products.
Regularly praised by industry professionals at national and international competitions, Vinho Verde has changed significantly over the last few decades. Significant investment has been made in viticulture, a new generation of winemakers has arrived, and the local industry has become more professional overall.
Year after year, producers in the Vinho Verde region present innovative wines of very high quality. Fresh and balanced, some wines, such as Vinho Verde Alvarinho, have remarkable aging potential.
Today, the Vinho Verde region, located in northwestern Portugal, is one of the largest and oldest wine-producing regions in the world. It is home to hundreds of producers who actively contribute to the development of the area.
The origin of the name Vinho Verde refers to the natural characteristics of the region, which produces dense, green foliage, but also contributes to the wine's profile with its freshness and lightness. It is this youthfulness that the name Vinho Verde refers to, in contrast to other more complex and full-bodied wines.
Most of the grape varieties grown for the production of Vinho Verde wines are indigenous: Alvarinho, Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro, and Trajadura for whites, and Espadeiro, Padeiro, and Vinhao for reds.
The Vinho Verde designation of origin (Denominação de Origem), which was made official in 1959, covers white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, brandy, Bagaceira marc, and red and rosé vinegar.
