Vinho Verde
Legend has it that Vinho Verde wines were the first Portuguese wines to be exported to Europe. In the 16th and 17th centuries, wines from the Minho and Lima valleys were regularly shipped to Northern Europe on the same ships that carried cod and other processed goods.
Regularly praised by industry professionals at national and international competitions, Vinho Verde has changed significantly over the past few decades. Significant investments have been made in viticulture, a new generation of winemakers has emerged, and the local industry has, overall, become more professional.
Year after year, producers in the Vinho Verde region present innovative, high-quality wines. Fresh and well-balanced, some—such as Vinho Verde Alvarinho—show remarkable aging potential.
Today, the Vinho Verde region, located in northwestern Portugal, is one of the largest and oldest wine-growing regions in the world. It is home to hundreds of producers who actively contribute to the region’s development.
The origin of the name “Vinho Verde” refers to the region’s natural characteristics, which feature dense, green foliage and also contribute to the wine’s profile through its freshness and lightness. It is this youthful quality that the name “Vinho Verde” refers to, in contrast to other wines that are more complex and full-bodied.
Most of the grape varieties grown for the production of Vinho Verde wines are indigenous: Alvarinho, Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro, and Trajadura for whites; Espadeiro, Padeiro, and Vinhao for reds.
The Vinho Verde Designation of Origin (Denominação de Origem), officially established in 1959, covers white, red, and rosé wines; sparkling wines; brandy; Bagaceira marc; as well as red and rosé vinegars.
