Pierre-Jean Villa - Côte-Rôtie Fongeant 2023
16,5/20
Jancis Robinson
"A treasure to be carefully stored in the cellar"
"(Sample taken from the barrel) Lovely fruity nose. Deeper and more concentrated than the Carmina. Firm but fine tannins, with a slightly chalky finish. Interesting potential. " (Jancis Robinson 2024). The Fongeant terroir stands on its own thanks to its depth, vigor, and energy. Magnificent, bright fruitiness, a radiant finish, lots of length and sap, superb.

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2023 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)
About the estate:
What remarkable progress for this new winemaker, who only started out in 2009. The constant care he devotes to his various plots and his meticulous work in the cellar enable him to produce Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte-Rôtie wines that rank among the best in their respective appellations. In 2020, the Côte-Rôtie Fongeant is close to perfection. The challenge for wine lovers will be to get their hands on a few bottles.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the estate:
Created in 2008, this estate has gone from strength to strength year after year. It has gradually expanded without losing sight of its philosophy: to produce wines with a distinct identity. For red wines, the proportion of whole bunches varies depending on the cuvée. High-quality aging enhances and smooths the wines without overpowering them. The whites retain their finesse. The quality and consistency of the entire production are remarkable.
